Yosemite Wildlife In And Around Yosemite

Oh, the Yosemite Wildlife! It is easy to see mule deer, squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, the great grey owl, acorn woodpecker, mountain chickadee, fish (12 different kinds), coyotes and the Stellar Jay Birds almost on a daily basis. If your one of the lucky ones, you'll see an American black bear, Peregrine Falcon, Golden Eagle or a California Bighorn Sheep.

Actually, there are 370 different kinds of wildlife in Yosemite National Park. There are 247 different species of birds here. There are a dozen different types of frogs, toads and salamanders. There are 16 kinds of reptiles, including the king snake and western rattlesnake.

If you look closely you might see the tracks of a badger,a bobcat, a fox or a mountain lion.

Below is a video of a herd of deer at Tuolomne Meadows.

Hunting is not allowed in Yosemite National Park. You are not allowed to feed the animals although the squirrels, Stellar Jay and raccoons are fed by an awful lot of visitors. The Bighorn Sheep are rarely seen on the valley floor. These are seen coming in on Highway 120, on hikes and driving to Tuolumne Meadows.

Human food does not do these animals any favors. If you are caught feeding the animals there is a $250 fine. Admire the animals from a safe distance and pull out your camera and take a picture.
