Tire chain Rentals?

by Rachel A
(Warren, MI)

I am going to Yosemite National Park for the first time in February and I was reading that I need tire chains. I thought my rental car company would provide them since they asked about it but no they say they don't have them. I live in Michigan so I don't have any chains to bring and would have to throw them out if I bought any since I'm flying in. Do you know if there is any place that rents them? I am staying in Oakhurst and driving in every day. Thank you so much, love the site.

Hi Rachel, You are going to love Yosemite when you come! We are having a very mild winter so far this year. Of course things can change in a moments notice but its pretty mild here.

In fact this is the first time in 30 years that Tioga Road in the high country of Yosemite is still open this time of year. It's cold, but no snow. Same with Glacier Point Road..its open! I hope it stays open so that you can go to Glacier Point. Normally it is closed in February.

Oakhurst is about a 1 hour drive to Yosemite. 30 minutes pass Oakhurst, you will come into a very small town called Fishcamp. At the local store you can rent chains if you should need them. (There is only one store in town so you can't miss it)

If you want to get chains While you are in Oakhurst most all of the gas stations along Highway 41 will have signs out infront telling you that they have chains. Some will require you to buy them and others will say you can rent them. Just read the signs infront of the half a dozen gas stations as you drive through Oakhurst.

If you do need chains on your car while you are here, they usually have people checking just before the park entrance. They also usually have a couple of guys willing to put them on for you for about $25-$30.

Hope that helps. Have a great visit when you come.
