The Redwoods In Yosemite
The redwoods in Yosemite National Park are divided into three groves. The Mariposa Grove, the Merced Grove and the Tuolumne Grove. Both the Mariposa Grove and the Merced Grove of trees are up above the valley floor of Yosemite in Tuolumne Meadows. Both of these groves of redwood trees have their trailheads beginning off of Big Oak Flat Road. The Mariposa Grove is accessed by the south entrance of Highway 41.
None of these giant sequoias have a deep root system. Their roots go two to six feet under the ground. They can stand with a shallow root system because the roots spread out around the tree more than 150 feet. This gives it stability to hold up the massive trunk. The roots spread out and come to the surface to get water. When one of these giants fall, they do not rot.
Mariposa Grove
This grove of sequoia trees has the largest trees in diameter and in height when compared to the other two groves in Yosemite Nat Park.
Merced Grove
This set of trees are the smallest of the three sets of beautiful trees. There are more than a dozen giant trees here. It is also the least visited and therefore the least crowded. It is four miles round trip to hike to these trees from Big Oak Flat Road.
Tuolumne Grove
There are about 45 sequoia trees in this grove. The trees here are a little larger in diameter and in height than those in the Merced Grove. This is a shorter hike at 2.4 miles round trip from Big Oak Flat Road.
