The canyon has a north rim and a south rim. The Painted Wall is on the north rim. The north rim gives you the best views of the narrowest poart of Black Canyon. The north facing was gets the least amount of daily sun and therefore the most shadows. These dark shadows are where the name Black Canyon comes from.

The south rim overlooks the valley, gives you great views of the Painted Wall and is the part of the national park that has the services for tourists. The south facing wall gets the most sun in the canyon.

The only way to get from one rim to the other rim is to drive. It takes two to three hours to make the drive. You can drive to the bottom of the of Black Canyon by taking the El Portal Road. However, no vehicle longer than 22 feet is allowed on this road. The road is open from mid April till mid November.
