The Black Canyon Of Gunnison National Park

The Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park is one of four Colorado National Parks. This US National Park is just over 30,000 acres. Located 250 miles southwest of Denver, Colorado.

This is beautiful place has an amazing canyon that is 53 miles long. At the widest point the canyon is 1,500 feet across. At the narrowest point, the canyon is 40 feet across. The deepest part of the canyon is 2,722 feet and the Gunnison River flows through the bottom of the canyon. And this is one very powerful river!

The state of Colorado has a lot of mountains and cliffs. But here in The Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park is the Painted Wall. This is actually the highest cliff in all of Colorado. It is 2,250 feet tall.

The canyon has a north rim and a south rim. The Painted Wall is on the north rim. The north rim gives you the best views of the narrowest part of Black Canyon. The north facing was gets the least amount of daily sun and therefore the most shadows. These dark shadows are where the name Black Canyon comes from.

The south rim overlooks the valley, gives you great views of the Painted Wall and is the part of the national park that has the services for tourists. The south facing wall gets the most sun in the canyon.

The only way to get from one rim to the other rim is to drive. It takes two to three hours to make the drive. You can drive to the bottom of the of Black Canyon by taking the El Portal Road. However, no vehicle longer than 22 feet is allowed on this road. The road is open from mid April till mid November.

Activities To Do At The Black Canyon Of Gunnison

There is a lot of outdoor activities to do once you are here. You can hike on both sides of the rim and down into the canyon. Backpacking, horseback riding, rock climbing, kayaking, fishing, camping, skiing, cross country skiing, snowshoe walks and photography round out the list!

There is a lot of poison ivy here in this national park. Especially in the bottom of the canyon along the river. Know what the plant looks like before you get here and know the remedies to overcome the rash that it brings on!
