Sequoia National Park California
Welcome to Sequoia National Park California! Deep granite canyons, caves, waterfalls and home to some of the largest trees in the world.
If your headed to Sequoia NP, be sure to check out my page on Kings Canyon NP as well. These two national parks are right next to each other. You can't very well see one of them without seeing the other!
Activities
There is a number of things to do here. There is hiking, backpacking, see the sequoia trees in the Grant Grove, Cedar Grove, picnic, camping, horseback riding, rock climbing, see Crystal Cave, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, snow play, and bring your camera to take pictures!
If you like to hike, then you must check out my page on the John Muir Trail. The trail goes right through this national park.
There are the Courtwright Reservoir and the Wishon Reservoir here. These are great places to go camping, fishing and horseback riding. Florence Lake and Lake Thomas Edison are favorites for those who like to fish.
Cedar Grove
Cedar Grove gives you alot of choices. You can hike to Zumwalt Meadows. Take the Don Ceil trail for a scenic view of the canyons. Take a 2 mile hike to Sheep Creek Cascades. There is also a 5 mile hike to the Cedar Grove lookout to more canyons. Hike 8 miles to Mist Falls. There are several trail beginning here to take you to the backcountry if you like to go backpacking.
The General Sherman Tree
This tree is 275 feet tall. That means that it is taller than a building that is 27 stories high! It measures 103 feet around its base. These giant sequoia trees have really thick bark. The bark is one to two feet thick. That is twice a thick as a redwood trees bark. These trees can easily live to more than 3,000 years.
This is a huge rock that you can climb. Stairs with rails have been put on the rock so that just about anyone can make the climb to the top. It is 400 steps to the top! Making it to the top will give you unprecedented views of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range and the Great Western Divide. Below is a video of the view from the top!
This is a wonderful camp. This is a camp that is open year around. Youth camps, family camps and adult retreats fill up their calendar. They have private cabins and lodge rooms available to the public. There is a beautiful lake filled with trout, rock climbing, swimming pools, rope courses and more.
Crystal Cave
Crystal Cave is the most visited cave here in the park. These caves are different than other caves because they Marble caves. They have put lights inside the cave so that you can see. Bring a sweatshirt, it is cold inside the cave!
