National Parks In Ohio
How many National Parks in Ohio are there? Just one. It is Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Even though it is not very large, compared to other US National Parks, this is the 10th most visited US National Park!
Waterfalls, steep narrow ravines, rivers, lakes, thick beautiful forests, wetlands and a great canal make up this Ohio National Park. Cuyahoge Valley National Park is in northeast Ohio. Located between the cities of Akron and Cleveland. It is about a 30 minute drive to Akron or Cleveland.
This is a national park that is only 51 square miles. But there is an abundance of wildlife and activities for you to do. There are 190 miles of rivers and streams in this national park. That allows for some great fishing and canoeing and kayaking in certain places. There is 125 miles of hiking and biking trails waiting to be explores.
Camping, backpacking, horseback riding and birdwatching are popular outdoor activities here. Take a steam train ride on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. The train is open all year long. Once your on the train, you can elect to listen to and audio tour of the local surroundings.
The Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath goes all the way this Ohio National Park. So does the Cuyahoga River. This river is often called the "crooked river" and you'll understand why once you see the Cuyahoga River!
The canal is 308 miles long. It was once a busy waterway that was filled with boats. The canal connects Lake Erie and the Ohio River. This use to be a transportation route for local business. You are not allowed to swim or kayak in the canal.
There are several places to stop and have a picnic if your looking to have beautiful scenery while you eat. It is a nice walk to the Richie Ledges. This is an interesting sandstone formation that provides and excellent lookout point for breath taking sunset views.
In September you can see the beautiful monarch butterflies feed in this national park. They are passing through as they migrate another 2,000 miles to Mexico. In November it is pretty easy to spot the bald eagles. And in the winter this is an excellent place to cross country ski or snowshoe.
Brandywine Falls, Blue Hen Falls and Buttermilk Falls are some of the waterfalls that you can hike to.
