Saguaro National Park Map

This US National Park is known for its huge cacti, the saguaro. These are the largest cacti in the United States. This giant cacti lives up to 200 years. They grow very slowly. It takes 15 years to grow a foot tall! It takes 30 years of growth to produce flowers and fruit. And it takes at least 75 years for any arms to grow on them. They can grow as tall as 50 feet and weigh up to 8 tons. Each cacti holds up to 200 gallons of water.

In June and July, the local indians knock the fruits off of the saguaros. They use the fig like fruits to make jams, syrup and wine. During the months of April, May and June, flowers bloom on the cacti. A couple of hours after sunset, the flowers open up. The flowers die by the next day. Each day a new flower grows and again opens up after sunset. Night after night, the saguaro cacti produces flowers.

There are over 50 different kinds of cacti here. The best month to visit this National Park in Arizona is the month of March.
