Mammoth Cave Kentucky

Mammoth Cave Kentucky is the longest known cave system in the world. There are 365 miles of surveyed cave passages that we know about. But the cave is still being explored and mapped out. And there is no end in sight that this cave has been entirely explored.

In fact there are two other massively large caves in the area. One is Fisher Ridge Cave and the other is the Martin Ridge Cave. It is highly possible that someday a passage will be discovered that shows all three caves actually connect together. If that discovery is found, it would mean that these 3 caves have over 500 miles of cave passages! And since Mammoth Cave Kentucky is already the longest cave passage in the world...that would pretty much seal the deal that it gets to keep its title!

This underground cave has a river in it. They used to give boat rides on the caves river, but that stopped. When you come to visit there are several different cave tours that you can choose from. Tours can last anywhere from 1 to 6 hours in length. Tours cost between $4 and $45 a person depending on the length of the tour that you choose. Tours take you 250 feet underground.

When you tour the cave, wear good walking shoes and bring a sweatshirt or jacket. The cave remains pretty consistent at 54 degrees. But if the wind is blowing, it can get pretty cold here.

This cave began forming about 10 million years ago. It is filled with stalactites and stalagmites. It's kind of easy to remember what each one of of these are. Stalactites are the formations that grow from the ceiling downward. They might hang on tight to the ceiling. The stalagmites are the formations that grow from the ground upward. They might grow upward!

The rocks in the cave are limestone capped by sandstone. The cave covers 400 square miles...it is huge. And by the way, no wooly mammoth ever lived here...it got is name because of its size!

Animals In The Cave

Inside Mammoth Cave Kentucky are all kinds of living creatures! First there are the bats. The Indiana Bat, the Gray Bat, the Little Brown Bat, The Big Brown Bat and the Eastern Pipistrelle Bat. There are also crickets, the salamander, the cave fish, the cave crayfish and the cave shrimp.

This cave is so popular to visit that this Kentucky National Park gets about 2 million visitors a year. On a busy summer day, 7,000 people can pass through here.
