How Many Maine National Parks Are There?
How many Maine National Parks are there? Just 1. Acadia. Arcadia National Park is an island with rocky shorelines. This is one of the most visited US National Parks...let me show you why!
Just off shore of the mainland is a cluster of islands. One of those island is called Mount Dessert Island. Acadia National Park is located on this one island.
The island is filled with forests, mountains, waterfalls, rivers, streams, swampland, beaches and beautiful meadows. There are thirteen major mountains on this island. The tallest mountain is Cadillac Mountain.
The tall mountain of Cadillac stands 1,530 feet tall. This is the highest point on all of the Atlantic coast. When the sunrises every morning, this is the first place that it shows itself. Making this fact a great selling point for each of us to visit Maine National Parks!
At 35,000 acres, Acadia National Park is one of the smaller US National Parks. But size does not matter here! Over 2 million people a year come to see what this place is like. This national park has a beautiful rocky shoreline. There are even old fashion carriage roads here. Carriage roads are made from hand laid broken stones. No vehicles are allowed to drive on these roads, but bikers and walkers will love being on them. There are approximately 45 miles of carriage roads here.
There is so much to do once you are here! You can go hiking, biking, swimming, lay on a beach, kayaking, canoeing, take a nature walk, attend a ranger talk, go fishing or spend time taking pictures. In the winter months you can go cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating and snowmobiling.
Thunder Hole is spectacular! This is a rocky inlet and there is a cave at the end of it. When the ocean waves come in, the water is trapped. The water sprays upward of 40 feet in the air! The trapped air claps like thunder as the waves crash into the rocky shoreline and cave.
Arcadia National Park Camping
There is no formal lodging in Acadia National Park. There is however two campgrounds for those who like to pitch a tent. The Blackwoods Campground is on the east side of the island and it is open from May 1st through October 31st. Then on the west side of the island is the Seawall Campground. These two campsites choices are both open from Memorial Day (May) through September 30th.
The months of September and October are especially popular months to visit here. The fall foliage is fantastic! The oranges, reds and yellows in the trees are nothing short of eye candy against the deep blue sea surrounding this island.
Arcadia National Park has been voted the Travelers Choice Award for one of the ten best places to travel to for outdoor fun and adventures. There are not many Maine National Parks, but when a US National Park is this good...one is all that you need!
Even though there are no hotels directly on Mount Desert Island, it is only a short boat ride to the shores of Maine. Ben Harbor, Southwest Harbor, Northeast Harbor and Bangor are all close by. There is also lodging and camping available on the nearby island of Isle Au Haut.
