Things To See & Do All About Yosemite Camping & Hiking Places To Stay Just For You! Other Information
Lassen Volcanic NP
Lassen Volcanic NP is one of eight National Parks in California. A park with lots of active thermal areas. This is a US National Park that has beautiful glacier canyons, waterfalls, lakes, forests, meadows, hot springs, boiling mud pots and lava fields.
This national park has 106,000 acres. It is open year around. The best months to visit the park are June and July. Bring your repellent though, because the mosquitoes are out in full force!
Lassen Peak
Lassen Peak last errupted in 1915. But don't be fooled, this is one active volcanoe. Lassen Peak is at the southern end of the Cascade Mountain Range. These cascades are the eastern boundary of roughly 300 active volcanoes that are a part of the Pacific Oceans Ring Of Fire.
This is the worlds largest plug dome volcanoe. This is a volcanoe that stands 10,457 feet tall. Past lava flows have created mountains and craters here. There are steaming sulphur vents in several active thermal areas of this national park.
Volcanic Activity
Most of the volcanic activity is in the area of Bumpass Hell. But other hydrothermal areas of the park are Little Hot Springs Valley, Pilot Pinnacle, Sulphar Works, Devils Kitchen, Boiling Springs Lake, Terminal Geyser and (my favorite) the Fart Gulch!
John Muir was a frequent visitor here. He wrote about the fumaroles. These are steam vents and volcanic gas vents. You can hike to see these boiling mud pots and steam vents.
There are four kinds of volcanoes in the world. And Lassen Volcanic National Park has all four kinds of volcanoes here in the park. Prospect Peak is a shield volcanoe.Lassen Peak is what is called a plug dome volcanoe.Cinder Cone is called a cinder cone volcanoe and Brokeoff Volcanoe is a composite volcanoe.
