Kings Canyon California
Welcome to Kings Canyon California! This is one of 8 National Parks in California. Sometimes called, the southern sierras. This national park is ajoined to Sequoia National Park. Both of these parks have deep canyons that were carved out by glaciers. There are eleven mountain peaks higher than 14,000 feet tall.
The granite walls of these canyons make for spectacular views.
There are over 800 miles of hiking trails here. 200 caves have been found but there are still hundreds of caves that have not even been discovered yet. Thousands of mountain lakes, streams and rivers make this a favorite of those who like to camp and fish.
The canyons are very deep here. I'm not kidding. The road into Kings Canyon makes some people turn around! It is an 8,000 foot drop from the rim of the canyon to the river. Making this the deepest canyon in all of North America. The canyon is half again deeper than the Grand Canyon!
Grove Of Giant Sequoia Trees
A favorite thing to see here are the giant sequoia trees. Thirty of the largest Giant Sequoia trees are here. This is home to the famous General Grant tree. It stands 267 feet tall. It is 40 feet across the base of the tree. It is more than 107 feet around. And it's still growing! The General Grant is estimated to be somewhere between 2,300 and 2,700 years old. The only way to know for sure is to cut it down and count the rings. (and no one is going to do that!)
The General Grant is the second largest living tree in the world. It is considered the largest living thing on earth because it take up more space than any other single organism.
This is the Nations Christmas tree! It is also a living shrine to all the men and women who have served in any war. This tree is huge! To appreciate it, you must stand at its base!

These sequoia trees only grow on the western side of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. They have a very shallow root system. The are resistent to disease, insects, fungi and fires. The only thing that brings them down is strong winds.
There is even a tunnel log to drive you car through!

Crystal Cave
Crystal Cave is the most visited cave here in the park. These caves are different than other caves because they Marble caves. They have put lights inside the cave so that you can see. Bring a sweatshirt, it is cold inside the cave!

Mt. Whitney
Mount Whitney is here as well. Surprisingly enough, you cannot see it when you are in the park. You must be east of the park to see Mt. Whitney. The reason that you cannot see Mt. Whitney is because the Great Western Divide blocks your view. Even so, this mountain is 14,495 feet tall and it is the highest mountain in the lower 48 states.
