John Muir Trail Map

If your thinking about taking this 212 mile hike, then your going to need a John Muir Trail Map! You will walk right through the middle of the John Muir Wilderness if you decide to backpack this trail.

The hike begins in Yosemite Valley and ends at the highest point in the United States, Mount Whitney. The trail leads you from the low elevation of 4,000 feet to the top of Mount Whitney at 14,496 feet. You will go over six passes that are over 11,000 feet each!

This trail was named in honor of John Muir. The John Muir Wilderness area is about 584,000 acres in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Inyo National Forests. You will trek through three National Parks. You will have an unforgettable adventure as you hike your way through Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park.

You will walk along the crest of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. You will walk through the John Muir Wilderness and the Ansel Adams Wilderness. You will see some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Sheer rocks, deep canyons and some of the Sierras largest glaciers. There are hundreds of hiking trails that branch off of the trail, so take John Muir Trail Maps with you.

You will pass through many lakes, streams and meadows. You will very likely catch fish for your dinners! And you will encounter several weather conditions, so dress in layers. Count on frost (unless your going mid-July to August), and thunderstorms.

You must have a wilderness permit since you will take about three weeks to complete this trek. You will find yourself deep into the wilderness, and it is likely that you will encounter a bear. Put all of your food in bear canisters and store your food properly.

There are four base camps for you to clean up and restock your backpacks. Tuolumne Meadows, Red's Meadow Resort, Vermillion Valley Resort and Muir Trail Ranch.

Do have someone pick you up once your finished at Mount Whitney. There is no public transportation to take you back to Yosemite Valley. Grab the John Muir Trail Maps below, a GPS and get your gear in order. It's hiking time!
