Isle Royale Michigan
Isle Royale Michigan is a great US National Park. It is an island in Lake Superior. You can only get here by taking a seaplane or a boat. Even though it is one of the less visited US National Parks, this island has a lot to offer. Piece and quite is one of the best things it has to offer! They get about 20,000 visitors a year here. Most national parks get that in one day.
This Michigan National Park is a top pick for those who like to scuba dive. Isle Royale National Park is one of 450 islands in Lake Superior. It's the biggest island too. It is 45 miles long and 9 miles wide.
Over the years, many boats and ships have navigated around these islands. But 25 ships didn't do so well! They hit reefs and sank. So there are lots of underwater shipwrecks for scuba divers to explore.
The most famous ship to go down here was the S.S. America. It was a ship that carried people and supplies from the shores of Michigan to the isle Royale. On June 7, 1928 it hit a reef and the hole that was made, sank it. Luckily all 45 of the people who were on board survived.
The fresh water of Lake Superior is very cold. It's usually about 60 degrees on the surface and 40 degrees beneath the surface. Since the water is cold and deep, the scuba diving here is really best for those who are experienced.
Activities
If your not into scuba diving, there is still a lot to do here. There is 165 miles of hiking trails to be explored. There is camping, take a cruise around the island, kayaking, canoeing, fishing and backpacking to do here as well. And for those who like to take pictures, you'll love the many lighthouses here!
Wildlife
There are lots of beautiful birds here. There is a couple of packs of wolves and a lot of moose to be seen here as well.
Isle Royale Michigan Lodging
You can stay overnight on the island. There are campsites for those who don't mind sleeping in tents. But there is the Lodge at Rock Harbor for the rest of us! You can get here through a couple of towns in Michigan. The towns of Houghton, Calumet, and Grand Portage all have boats to bring you here. Isle Royale Michigan is 73 miles from the shores of Michigan.
This US National Park is just over 132,000 acres. It has some beautiful thick forests to explore. The park is closed from November 1 through April 15th because of the snowpack. Be sure to bring your repellent from May through July because the mosquitoes are quite hungry!
I don't recommend coming here for just the day. Plan to spend at least a night or two. The ships don't come in and out often enough to give you enough time to explore this beautiful island in a couple of hours.
