Hiking Tips
Let me share with you my best hiking tips so that you can enjoy your visit to Yosemite National Park. The weather can change fast in the Yosemite. Get yourself some hiking apparel. Dress in layers. This way you can remove or add clothing when the weather gets colder or hotter than when you started your hike. When you are hiking outdoor you can wear what you already have in your closet. If you plan on hiking alot then I would seriously invest in hiking clothes. Like hiking pants, hiking shoes, hiking boots, hiking backpack and other hiking gear.
Clothing has really gotten better over the years. Leave the cotton underwear at home! Get undergarments that are made of polypropylene. Polypropylene is much better than cotton. It moves sweat away from your skin so that you don't get a rash. These items can be found in most sport stores.
If you are hiking a waterfall that has a mist trail, then bring a rain coat and waterproof pants.
Bring a hat! 80% of our body heat is lost through our neck and our head. Necks get sunburned easily so wear a good sunscreen and bring the bottle with you so you can reapply it.
Bring lip balm. When your lips dry out you tend to lick them and they just get worse.
Wear a thick pair of socks so that you don't get blisters on your feet. If you don't have thick socks then wear two pair of regular socks.
Bring sunglasses.
A couple of bandaides is always handy to have in the backpack. If you can find a small first aide kit, I would bring it.
Insect repellent. Apply it every three to four hours. There is not a spot in Yosemite that doesn't have mosquitos. (You'll thank me for this hiking tip!)
Bring your camera and an extra battery.
Invest in a pair of binoculars and bring them with you. I gaurantee you will pull them out of your pack and use them!
Bring a flashlight incase you get stuck on a trail after the sun goes down. With no street lights...its very dark on the trails at night!
Always carry snacks with you. Check out my favorite trail mix recipe.
Carry water with you. We like to use the camel packs. It's a backpack on your back with a straw. Each of my kids have their own camel pack because water bottles make a backpack or fanny pack very heavy.
My kids all have a whistle with them when we hike. My teenager and my husband carry pocket knives because they love to pick up a stick and whittle away when we stop to rest.
Invest in hiking shoes or hiking boots. Tennis shoes are ok. Sandels, flip flops and slip on shoes do not work when you are hiking. Infact, they are dangerous. They slip when climbing over rocks. They get sand and dirt in them when you are walking on the trails. And one last thing, break new shoes in before a long hike.
Follow these hiking tips and you will make the most of your experience while hiking in Yosemite National Park.
