The area here used to be under the ocean. That's right. 265 million years ago this was an underwater marine reef. Buried under sediments and sea salt the reef was found when the water evaporated millions of years later. Today the area is regularly visited by scientists and geologists from around the world. And for those of us who just like to travel, there is some great hiking, backpacking, fishing and camping to be done here. This is also a great place to bring your camera and do some photography. Because of the dark skies, stargazing is a perfect night time activity.
Four of Texas's highest mountain peaks are here in Guadalupe National Park. Guadalupe Peak is the highest peak of them all. The summit is 8,749 feet tall. If you hike to the top, you will have a 360 degree view of more than 100 miles from all directions.
