Great Sand Dunes ColoradoGreat Sand Dunes Colorado. Who in their right mind thinks about going to sand dunes in the state of Colorado?! This is one of four national parks in Colorado. This US National Park has 150,000 acres. The sand dunes are 7 miles by 5 miles. The Star Dune is 750 feet tall and is the tallest sand dune in the United States!These are not sand dunes that you can bring ATV's or motorbikes to. You can however, walk the sand dunes, build sand castles here, sled down the sand dunes (we call this sand boarding), and take beautiful pictures of the dunes. There is several streams of water around the perimeter of the dunes. The water carries the sand down stream. Since this is a windy area, the winds carry the stand back to the dunes. Without the streams of water, these dunes would disappear! The sand gets very hot here in the summer afternoons. In fact, it can get up to 140 degrees. That will cause severe burns. So bring your shoes! The sand dunes are great to walk on. It is actually easier to walk on the top ridges than it is on the sides of the dunes. Morning and evening walks can be a lot of fun for hiking the dunes. Other Activities Besides the sand dunes, there are other things to see and do here. You can hike the forest areas, camp, fish, go horseback riding, ski and take in the breathtaking scenery.
