Yosemite Glacier Point
You may drive your car up to Yosemite National Parks Glacier Point. This is the place to come and oversee the valley of Yosemite National Park and the surrounding Sierra Nevada Mountains. When you stand up here you will see vast expanses of terrain that is so high, few trees even grow! What you will see will take your breath away. And guess what...the views are all free to take in...making this an affordable family vacation! The road to this magnificent place is closed when there is snow. The road is open usually from June through October. 3200 feet below this lookout point is Yosemite Valley. It is easy to spot Curry Village, The Lodge, The Ahwahnee Hotel, Yosemite Falls, Half Dome, Nevada Falls, Vernal Falls, The Merced River, the Sierra Nevada Mountain range and many other points of interest from this lookout point.
During the summer months you will find some evenings where avid star gazers have their telescopes out. They allow visitors to look through their telescopes and engage in conversation with you about what you are seeing. When you are in Yosemite Valley, it takes about one hour to drive to this fantastic lookout point. This is the same road that you take to go to the ski area, Badger Pass. There is a campsite named Bridalveil Creek if you want to camp overnight. This road is easy to drive and very scenic. There use to be a firefall in Yosemite. A waterfall of fire. The firefall was made by making a fire at Yosemite Glacier Point and then pushing the burning embers off of the cliff. The fire would burn itself out before reaching Camp Curry below. As a little girl I remember watching the firefall every fourth of July. The firefall was stopped in 1968 after 88 years. The side of the mountain is still stained black from the years of man made firefalls. I highly recommend that you take the time to come to the top of Yosemite National Park and take in the view. This is a view that is unmatched. There is a gift shop and a small restaurant grill here. It is easy to spend a couple of hours here on top. Bring your binoculars and your camera. You will go home with picture perfect photos to remember this place by. Here is an interesting fact: From 1872-1969 there was Resort Hotel built on the tip of Yosemite Glacier Point. There was another Resort Hotel between Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls from 1872-1890 and another Resort Hotel in the Little Yosemite Valley area. None of the Resort Hotels are here now. Darn...I would have loved to have stayed at all of them! There is no trace that they were ever here.
