There are four separate ecosystems that meet in these water. Making this a rich area for sea life. There have been many shipwrecks off of these shores that you can explore.

There are 42 surrounding barrier islands that are loaded with wildlife, trees and shrubs.

On shore you can have a picnic, hike and camp (tents only). On shore or out on/in the water are opportunities for those who are into photography.

Loggerhead Turtles

There is an abundance of marine life in these waters. Loggerhead turtles and green turtles are some of the favorite. They make their nests on the sandy shores of Biscayne National Park.

The females lay on the average of a hundred eggs at a time. Loggerhead turtles will make a nest, lay their eggs and two weeks later, they will make another nest and lay more eggs. They end up making four sets of nets during their fertile season. Each nest is made two weeks apart.

Once they lay their eggs, the turtles, head back out to sea. Leaving the eggs vunerable to the elements. The turtle eggs are on their own to survive and hatch and find their way out to sea. The eggs are lucky if they are not washed away by high tides or eaten by the local aligators, raccoons or other wildlife.

The average life a a turtle is more than 100 years. They can also reach 400 pounds or more.

Besides turtles, this bay is rich with other marine life. Fish, butterflies, deer, peregrine falcons, bald eagles, manatees, sharks, lobsters, stingrays and pelicans are just a few.

Convoy Point

If your not big on going under the water to explore Biscayne National Park, you can do other things. Glass bottom bottom boats are fun to go on. There is a picnic area here. The fishing from shore is great and there are some nice walking trails to explore.
