Yosemite's Famous Glaciers
Take a look at Yosemite's famous glaciers! Most people know that Yosemite has been carved out by glaciers but they aren't aware that above Yosemite's valley floor, there are still living glaciers.
Yosemite National Park is not famous for its living glaciers. But ice glaciers are still here in this California National Park. Mount Lyell is the tallest peak in Yosemite and it tops out at 13,114 feet.
The Mt. Lyell glacier is the largest living ice glacier in Yosemite National Park. It is also the second largest in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It moves about 20 feet each year. To the west of Mt. Lyell is the Mt. Maclure glacier. To the south is the glacier at Kuna Peak-Koip Peak.
Make no mistakes these are not just large snow fields, they are living glaciers. Mt. Lyell glacier was twice the size that it is now in 1863.
Yosemite is definitely a showcase of past glaciers hard at work. But high above Yosemite Valley there are still living ice glaciers that are still carving their magic in this US National Park. Do to our globally changing climate, the glaciers are slowly melting. In a couple of decades, they could very well be gone.
Below is a great video of living glaciers in Yosemite National Park. You can climb one, go inside of one or just do what I do and enjoy the video!
