East Coast National Parks
How many east coast National Parks Well, there is one great one located in northwestern Virgina. The very scenic Shenandoah National Park has the famous Blue Ridge Mountains, lots of waterfalls, wildlife and plenty of hiking. The Blue Ridge Mountains are some of the oldest mountain in the world. They were formed more than one billion years ago and the jagged mountain tops are spectacular. These mountains extend from Pennsylvania to Georgia.
With more than 500 miles of marked hiking trails, you can take an easy, moderate or strenuous hike. I find it interesting that to get to a waterfall here, you have to hike down to it. Not up to it. There are sixteen waterfalls that you can hike to in this National Park.
Once you are here, you can do many outdoor activities. Hiking, biking, camping, backpacking, fishing, photography, horseback riding, rock climbing, rappelling, stargazing or take a scenic drive.
The Skyline Drive is one of the most beautiful scenic drives anywhere. You can drive 105 miles from one end of the park to the other. The speed limit is 35 miles an hour, which is perfect. This allows you too see wildlife right from the comfort of your car! Stop at any of the 75 overlooks to take in the views.
You'll especially love the fall colors if you come when the leaves are changing. Bright reds, vivid oranges and spectacular yellows flood the landscape from October 10th to the 25th every year. Allow yourself at least three hours to enjoy the Skyline Drive.
The famous Appalachian Trail parallels above Skyline Drive for 101 miles. 400 miles of the Appalachian Trail go through Shenandoah National Park. The highest peak is Hawksbill Mountain which is 4,051 feet tall.
This is a long narrow US National Park. Two peaks here are above 4,000 feet and the weather has been known to change very quickly. On the west side of the park is the Shenandoah River and on the east side of the park is beautiful rolling hills. 95% of this east coast National Park is forest.
This east coast National Park and Yosemite National Park on the west coast have a high number of black bears living in them. 300 to 500 black bears live in Shenandoah National Park. Also living here are deer, foxes, coyotes, bobcats, hawks, wild turkeys, rabbits, skunks, lizards, turtles, frogs and snakes. So keep your eyes open to spot the wildlife!
There are four campgrounds inside this National Park if you like to camp. There is hotel lodging in and around the park for those who are looking to keep the bears away!
