Dressing For Cold Weather
Dressing for cold weather is essential if you are hiking, camping, backpacking or plan on being outdoors during the cold months. The key to staying warm in cold weather is layering your clothes and not getting wet. Once you are wet and cold, hypothermia can set in. If the weather warms up, you can always take layers of clothes off so that you don't get too warm.
Dress In Four Layers
The first layer (against your skin) should be a long sleeve shirt. Make sure it is thin and lightweight. Thin material helps to keep the sweat away from your skin and if by chance it gets wet from you sweating, it will dry fast. This layer of clothing also helps to regulate your body temperature. The second layer should be a shirt that is a little thicker. Make sure that it is made from wool, polyester or a blend of the two materials. The third layer should be a jacket with a hood. The puffier the jacket the better. The puffy jackets insulate your body heat and helps you to stay warm. The fourth layer should be a waterproof shell. It needs to be a larger size than you normally wear since it is to go over the first three layers that you will be wearing. Stay away from a white colored shell because you'll just blend in with the snow! Below are some great second layer shirt choices for cold weather.
