Congaree National Park
Congaree National Park is in the middle of the state of South Carolina. There is 22,000 acres of beautiful lakes, rivers and thick forests in this US National Park. Trees with an interesting root system are the reason that this is often referred to as the old growth bottomland forest.
The trees is this forest average 100 feet tall. They provide a thick canopy of cover. Between the water and the dense forest of trees, there are some spectacular animals that call this place home. It's a wonderful place to bird watch.
One of the best ways to see Congaree NP is by canoe or kayak. You need to bring your own or rent one in the nearby city of Columbia. This US National Park is flooded from December to about May. It floods because this is a lowland forest. Because of all the water be forewarned that you need to bring mosquito repellent with you. Also, becareful not to touch the poison oak!
If you don't want to canoe or kayak down the slow moving Congaree River then you can explore this park by walking on the raised boardwalks. The walkway is raised 10 feet above the ground.
You can hike, fish, camp and if your into photography, your going to have a great time! If your lucky you may see a bobcat, a snake, a deer, a wild bore or the beavers that live here.
Best times to visit this US National Park is spring and fall. Rangers will lead walks and give talks during certain times of the year. This is a South Carolina National Park with a visit!
