Channel Islands Of California
A set of five islands make up this National Park called Channel Islands of California. The five islands are the Anacapa Island, the Santa Cruz Island, the Santa Rosa Island, the San Miguel Island and the Santa Barbara Island.
These islands are not crowed with your usual national parks crowds of people. The islands are great for camping, hiking and those who charish the outdoors. Uncrowded white sand beaches, whale watching, bird watching, surfing, kayaking, canoeing, scuba diving, dophin watching, fishing and photography are the main activities to do here.
There are no hotels on any of the islands, just tent camping. Lodging from the shores of southern California is readily available. A couple of hours to a day on each island is sufficient time to take in this natural conservatory and national park.
Whales can be seen year around here. The grey whales are here from the months of December to the month of March. The blue whales and the humpback whales are here in the summer. The blue whale is the largest living animal in the world. And the worlds largest gathering of blue whales come here to the Channel Islands National Park every summer. About 10% of the worlds population of blue whales are right here! You can watch them from a boat or the shore.
There is no lodging on any of the Channel Islands. But you can stay nearby in the cities of Oxnard, Santa Barbara and Ventura. Below are all excellent choices for you to consider.
This island is home to thousands of birds! It is also the breeding grounds for sea lions and seals. There is a lighthouse and 2 miles of hiking trails to be conquered here. This island has 130 sea caves if you like to kayack or go canoeing. Anacapa Island is 5 miles long and 1/4 of a mile wide. Wildflowers are abundant certain times of the year.
Santa Cruz Island
This is the largest of the Channel Islands. It is 24 miles long and 6 miles wide. One of the worlds largest sea cave can be explored here. It called the Painted Sea Cave. it is 1215 feet long and 100 feet wide! It has a waterfall over the entrance in the spring. The ceiling is 160 feet tall. There are also two mountain ranges on this island and 3 beautiful beaches. The tide pools are a great place to explore here and the sea lions and seals are abundant here.
Santa Rosa Island
This is the second largest island. It is 10 miles long and 15 miles wide. Lots of hiking and a beautiful white sand beach is here.
San Miguel Island
The farthest island out, makes this the windy island. There are 3 miles of hiking trails and some really nice beaches here. This island is 8 miles long and 4 miles wide. Because of the high winds, this is not the best place for kayaking, canoeing, surfing, fishing and swimming.
Santa Barbara Island
This is the smallest of the Channel Islands in California. It is a one square mile island with 5 miles of hiking trails.
