Badlands National Park South Dakota

Badlands National Park South Dakota is a beautiful example of what wind and water can sculpt out over time. This is a place where rocks have been reshaped over time and colored with gentle hues of yellows, black and browns. Interesting spires, buttes and pinnacles dot this US National Parks landscape.

Badlands National Park South Dakota has some of the best geological findings in all of the United States. Volcanoes have left behind their ash. Sand beds from rivers and findings from the ocean floor have layered the cliffs with interesting geological findings.

The most visited site of the park is the Badlands Wall. The winds and the rain have left the spine of buttes that stretch out for more than 60 miles. The Badlands Wall is a scenic drive that will leave you wondering where you are. When I was here, I didn't know if I just stepped back into a western movie or landed on another planet.

Stopping at one of the many lookout points, the dusty landscape softens as the sun begins to set. The land comes to life when the cliffs are washed in reds, yellows and oranges from the sun going down. It's quite here. It's peaceful too. This is a lanscape free from the trappings of being cluttered up by man made things. It is beautiful.

Badlands National Park Hiking

Hiking is a great way to see this 24,000 acre national park. There are many trails that will allow you to get up close to the layers of sediment that makes up the buttes, spires and cliffs that are found here.

Hiking trails here are not all that long and exhausting like they are in Yosemite National Park. But they are steep enough to give you a good workout. There are trails that will take you through canyons, the bluffs and into gullies. Up and close views of sandstone formations and views of valleys makes breaking a sweat totally worthwhile.

Interesting Fact:

The Oscar winning movie, "Dances With Wolves" was filmed here in Badlands. Another movie, "How The West Was Won" had parts of it shot here too.
