Denali The Great Alaska National Park
Denali, the Alaska National Park that is home to Mt. McKinley, the tallest mountain in North America. A park with extreme weather, beautiful animals and great hiking trails.Denali is a 6 million acre National Park and it is open year around to visitors. This beautiful land is home to countless rivers and lakes. There is one road that goes thru Denali and it is 92 miles long. The first 15 miles are paved. Once you are at the end of the pavement you can go further into the park but you must take a tour bus or a shuttle. These tours operate from the month of May thru the month of September.

Denali has a diversity of wildlife. Home to the moose, wolves, grizzly bears, caribou, birds, sheep and squirrels to name a few. There are no reptiles here and only one kind of frog! There are outdoor activities to do year around. The spring and summer months allow for hiking, bike riding, camping (tent and RV's), photography, climbing Mt. McKinley and some of the best salmon fishing in the world.

There are six campgrounds inside the park. They are Riley Creek, Savage River, Sanctuary River, Teklanika River, Igloo Creek and Wonder Lake. None of the campgrounds have electrical or water hookups for those of you in RV's. The summer months are thick with mosquitos so bring repellent! The winter months are a great time to go cross country skiing, dog mushing, snowshoeing or take a ride on a snowmobile. There is no hunting allowed in this Alaska National Park. However, with a permit and a local Alaska hunting license you are allowed to hunt in the Denali Preserve. With breath taking views and some of the cleanest air you will ever breath, Denali is only 240 miles north of Anchorage.

The weather is extreme here. It can actually snow any day of the year. The summer months range from 33 to 75 degrees fahrenheit. The extreme winters range from -40 to 20 degrees fahrenheit.

Earthquakes
Earthquakes are very common here. But don't be scared because they aren't usually felt! Over 600 earthquakes a year are recorded. Most occur deep at the base of Mt McKinley. And most of the quakes register between a magnitude of 1 - 4.5. It usually takes a quake with the magnitude of 5.0 or greater to be felt when you are here. The base of the mountain is 2,000 feet. The summit tops out at 20,320 feet. It is the tallest mountain in North America and located inside of Denali National Park.
