Yosemite Park Horseback Riding

Yosemite Park has three stables that offer horseback riding. You may ride to the top of a waterfall! Or ride to just below the cables of Half Dome. There are many scenic rides throughout Yosemite and the surrounding area to choose from. Yosemite has a horse stable down in the valley and up in Tuolumne Meadows and in Wawona. You will take in breath taking scenery as you are guided on trails throughout the valley.

Yosemite uses horses and mules for their rides. The mules have great footing for the rocky and sandy trails. Mules have a better temperment than horses. They will match the rider to the animal, you don't pick what you want to ride. They tend to use more of the mules in the valley and the horses in Tuolumne and at Wawona. There are several rides that are available for you to enjoy. You may ride for two hours, four hours or all day long.

The stables are open from 7am till 5pm.

Children must be at least 7 years old to ride.

No double riders.

Maximum weight of a rider is 225 pounds.

Stables are closed during the winter.

All horse trips are lead by trained guides.

During the summer months, the trips fill up fast so make reservations befor you come.

Rides are available for all levels of riders.

Yosemite Valley Stables (209) 372-8348

Wawona Stables (209) 375-6502

Tuolumne Stables (209) 372-8427

Here are the rates. The rates are the same for all three stables.

2 hour rides are $59.

4 hour rides (Half day rides) are $79.

Full day rides are $119.

On a personal note!
Last summer we wanted to take my father up to the top of Half Dome. Because of his health we knew that he could not make the strenuous hike that it is. So we decided to take him up on horseback. The full day horseback riding trip will take you to just below the cables. Then, you get off your horse (or mule), do a little bit of uphill walking and then climb the cables. Yosemite Park really wants their animals to be back at the stables by 5 pm. We had 30 minutes to do our little bit of walking and then climb the cables. My husband ran! He had all of 1 minute on top of Half Dome and then returned to the horses. No one else had enough time. So...if you know this...enjoy the beautiful scenic ride, the smell of the trees but don't expect to get to the top of Half-Dome on the full day ride. Still worth the experience!
